Lots of really good management decisions yesterday. Murchan on Daly looked crazy at the start, but it worked out really well. Murchan is just unbelievable. I can't ever think of an occasion when I have seen him lose a ball.
Everyone else was either good or very good. Comerford had some serious good kickouts, the full back line was well on top, as was the half back line.
But midfield was the key. Howard is seriously good. He will be an excellent half forward at senior level, and I think he could go straight in there now and do a job if needed. Galvin was superb, not just with the high fielding which he has a height advantage at, but also his athleticism in getting around the field and being on the end of moves. Foley had touch luck going off in the last two games, but there were stages in the early Leinster games when his physicality helped to keep us on top in games.
Byrne is a lovely footballer in the half forwards. Like all guys who's immediate thought is to run at people (Kevin Mc for instance), he is going to turn over ball sometimes as the difference between breaking through and getting held up can be tiny. But also like Kevin Mc he will create goals. You have to have players who can take on men and beat them.
O Reilly really knows where the posts are. His percentage shooting from distance appears very good. He would need to fill out a bit to have a lash at senior, but he is young yet. Fox likewise can take a score.
Basquel did a lot more then I initially thought, he punched holes in them all day. I didn't see it really until I watched the recording. Likewise O Callaghan, although he was on a superb full back.
But this was one of the best ball carrying Dublin teams I have ever seen, 10 of them or so were seriously comfortable carrying the ball at speed. With that, you will turn the ball over a lot though. Mind you, with the long ball tactic into Con you will turn over a lot of ball too. But, he only has to get it once.
But if I was to pick potential seniors, I would say Howard and O Callaghan. Basquel also, but he didn't fully show it yesterday. O Shea at full back is very tidy as is McMahon. Byrne will definitely get some runs come O Byrne Cup time, as will Foley and maybe Galvin could be the Fenton type bolter from that pack (as could O Reilly actually). But I would think Howard and O Callaghan are as nailed on as you can get.
I would love if Murchan could make it, as I think there is probably something wrong with the rules of the game if they totally mitigate against the smaller lad. But I suspect there could well be something wrong and he will struggle. But inch for inch, he is the best player on that team and it could well be worth making a tactical decision on how to include him, like Donegal do with McHugh, who wouldn't be a whole heap bigger.
