I am not sure how they can confirm something that is totaly outside their control.
For stuff like this it is ok. But I think it needs to be kept relatively under control. You can't do it for every retiree or every tragic event. You then risk offending on occasions when it doesn't happen.
On a similar subject, I hate the way the minutes silence is being turned into clapping. If the announcer asks for silence, that is what should be given. On occasion they do ask for a round of applause, and then it is ok. But the way the minutes silence is slowly turned into clapping now by a few people who want to impose their way of doing it is disrespectful.
