All sorts of numbers have been handed out in that respect, but they are all based opinion polls and probably not the most reliable ones, there is no doubt that it would be a very close vote but with the way Spain has been handling it in recent years the independence vote has surged. The most recent example of this was the King’s first public speech to the nation on the issue, not one word about the use of violence by the Spanish police, not one word for the people that were injured, laying the whole blame at the feet of the Catalan people, it would be difficult for a Catalan this morning to feel represented by the King.
It should be remembered that the acts last Sunday were planned and orchestrated, the proof of that is that the Police acted in exactly the same way in every polling centre they entered and they went into dozens, the Police used violence to the extent to injure over 800 people and yet made no arrests as far as I know.
The police were there to stop the voting, in most cases they made no attempt to, they just went in, hit people, smashed things up and left and voting continued, there were very few cases where they actually bothered taking the ballot boxes.
We now have cases where the police are leaving their hotels of their of accord and acting in the street, last night in a village in Barcelona, hundreds of cars mysteriously had their tyres punctured, the police are staying nearby. The head of the Catalan police has now been called before the judge to explain the Catalan’s police’s action over the weekend.
The Spanish government seem intent on making matters worse IMO. Calling in the head of the Police is totally unnecessary, keeping the Spanish police here is simply provocation of the highest order.
