worked in Galway for years and a few lads were like that - hate us hate the supporters hate the team - but didn't mind the hurlers !
other side of the coin , a good man from achill loved us and the supporters , he'd go to croker to watch us in the league as he loved the atmosphere and would be at pains to say it to the rest of the country men who didn't like us - cos they don't know us. He'd be one of the many mayo folk i'd be happy for when they win Sam.
there was a particular journo who had a small column piece in the galway indo and he would without fail have a pop at the dubs any time he could cant remember his name but think the piece was called the square ball - he wouldn't even have the scope to cover a dublin game most of the time as i think we may have played one season together in the league but he fucking hated us - he use to boil my piss with some of the shit he would come out with - that i had to write into the paper and challenge him on it - the dublin media he use to coin the phrase drove the dubs everywhere and that included RTE, i pointed out to him as a journo there is a bigger circulation in dublin and thats why the paper is sucking up to the dubs and would he not understand that as the followers of Dublin GAA could see it a mile off - build us up and watch us get knocked out in august each year. i put it to him that he wasn't so critical of the Galway footballers when they scraped by new york - i asked him why didnt he put the boot into the team - was it because he didnt want to upset the readership ?
another of his bug bearers was that the question every year put to the dubs, was this the year they would win Sam and that it was disrespectful to the others in leinster - again asked him had he the same issue with the kilkenny hurlers each year as that never bothered him in his pieces.
anyway i suppose it worked for him , he got me reading his piece each week
i say now hes livid that we have won what we have won - especially as he didn't mind our hurlers !!
its a country city thing , my mother is from roscommon and prior to 2014 all ireland i was asking my uncle who was he cheering for the Dubs against Kerry - he said Kerry , i asked him how many nieces and nephews he had in Kerry (none) and would he not be shouting for us to let us be happy - he sort of understood my logic but still it was a no !
it would be boring if they all wanted us to win like 2011 all the time !
