No - The Synott decking was from the Leinster finall of 1988. A different era.
1988 was the dark nadir of our vicious and highly controversial rivalry with Meath. So much happened in the 1987-1988 season. In the first league match they grabbed a late draw against us in a nasty league match in Croker.- notable because Meath took offence to the fact that we didn’t give them a guard of honour when they came out onto the pitch after they’d won Sam.
We then met in the league final which was a draw thanks to a late McNally equaliser - as Hayes says in his excellent autobiography (from memory), “He scored and then right in my face kissed the sky and blessed himself and lorded it up.” That was just one of the reason Hayes said that he HATED McNally with a passion.
Before the replay, there was an American All Stars trip with Meath, where the Meath team kicked the crap out of Dublin’s only two representatives in an exhibition match - Duff and Kennedy. Afterwards, one of the Meath lads, McCabe I think, threw a pint over Duff.
So that set the tone for the replay. Alas, Dublin back in Ireland had an injury crisis after a Millenium challenge match against The Rest of Ireland Team (which included Barny Rock!). And so Meath hammered us. Duff was sent off. We lost a huge fist fight (Murphy decked) and Hayes scored a brilliant goal.
Could it get worse? Of course it could.
The Leinster Final: two early goals had us chasing it. But we gradually reined them in. Then Synnott falls for the oldest trick in the book and gets sent off. But all is not lost. We win a last gasp penalty. Redmond blasts it over the bar - the referee blows the final whistle - Redmond falls to his knees. Harnan goes up to him and . . . commiserates??? Not a chance! Instead Harnan pulls Redmond’s top up and shouts, “Give me your F*&king jersey! Give me your F*&king jersey!”
God, how I HATED that Meath team. But looking at the current crowd, I kinda miss them too!
