Just in. Difficult conditions can excuse a lot, but I have never seen a less spirited Wexford senior hurling team in a championship game.
Good points for us: Dooley did everything asked of him. FB line gets better every day - O Donnell looks the part (has a great turn of pace), O Callaghan is very strong and gives very little away. Gough did well. Overall, we have good full backs - nice to see Paul Schutte back and Corcoran is there too. If Peter Kelly gets back and O Callaghan stays fit then we'll have the nice problem of finding a place for Peter .
Our HB line is also very good. Rushe not pushed tonight - very solid and gives a great sense of security to the defence. The beanpoles on the wings are also good. Midfield was good too. McCaffrey seems to be coolness personified at times, always gets on lots of ball. O Connell took his goal well and had a reasonable evening and his turn of foot could be critical in tough games. Durkin wasn't needed, which is a sort of good sign.
And now for the problems - the HF line has a major problem in ball-winning. McMorrow was our best forward but almost all his possession comes from getting free of his man and their no. 6 then gets left free. Tonight Foley cleared a heap of balls (the poor sod just had nothing much to aim at). Treacy is a lovely young man, but I think Cunningham looks at him with rose-tinted glasses. He missed/dropped short 5 or 6 frees and seemed to fumble or fall most times when near or in possession. The FFL is also weak. Dotsy did a few things but was overall poor - seemed to be treating the ball as a bar of soap with a Wexford hatchet not far away. Mark and Eamon are simply poor when it comes to winning tough possession - between them they had about 25 balls sent in their direction and won only a few. For big men they are naive under high balls and always need low balls in front. Dillon took his goal, but it started with (yet another) fumble from a Wexford player and their goalie was all at sea.
Good to see ROD back - took a nice point. Young Bennett looked the part - seems to have a bit of dog about him too - and that's needed. But when he came on Wexford were on the bus home. And what in God's name is the point in bringing Paul Ryan on with one minute of normal time left in a dead and buried game? Its almost an insult to a man of his talent and experience.
Overall, we didn't learn much. I hope Dunne steps aside before the qualifiers. You could see their morale was low - and they have just won 3 u-21s - where are these players?
From our point of view, we probably are a much better dry weather team, but when you think of Kilkenny, can you think of any of their top forwards who are poor at winning dirty ball? No. We started a full set of forwards who are not great on this front today. Still, we are still standing and 2-19 ain't so bad.
