Journalists & sports journalists in particular seem to think that it’s their job to dissect every single utterance, glance, look and action of every player and manager in sport. They are obsessed with the idea of cutting people (especially winners) down to size and putting them in their place. Journos assume that they and they only possess an intellectual and moral superiority and are duty bound to educate the masses of the folly of supporting their team/player/sports star.
They attempt to take the good out of everything, reducing sport to nothing more than a joyless cocktail of analysis and intellectualized nonsense, some of the rugby analysis is particularly nauseating.
Gavin rightly treats them with suspicion, he is aware that the barbed question is only around the corner and that the main purpose of the line of questioning is to entice a mis-spoken work which can be then spun into a “wont someone please think of the children” headline and related piece of hand wringing vomit. Jim knows this and gives them zero hostages and treats the assembled journalists with the disdain that they deserve. The only hostage to fortune that JG has given, was a statement that Dublin like to play football properly, then whenever there is an incident, the high and might of the press corps trot out the “dont give me that purist football nonsense” (see Joe Molloys Twatter account bolixology).
An example of this type of journalism can be seen when they ask loosing managers if they will consider their position moments after a defeat, and before they have had a chance to reflect on it. Then you see the X manager was prickly withe press headline, or X says he has the full support of…
So Jim keeps treating these guys as the enemy, because that is what they are, they are looking to make a living off sports peoples backs and fill pages in the scandal rags and radio shows with their guff. They are a pox and deserve to be treated as such.
