I’d rather have someone who is interested in Dublin Hurling not just a ‘Job Managing Dublin Hurlers’. What’s the point in having a person who gets us to Div 1, Wins a few Champo games, says “My Work here is Done” and pisses off after three years.
I know its asking a lot from a Senior Manager, but, I’d rather we get someone in place who can look at Dublin Hurling as it stands from U.15 upwards and ask’s the questions of “What’s in place currently?” and “How do we produce 5-6 players per year filtering into Senior Level?”
To me that’s a Manager who’s really interested in Dublin Hurling.
Personally I think the Development Squads have gone a bit stale, and I don’t mean to take away from the work that’s been done for the last 15 years, the structures there have worked, just look at our results at U.15 to U.21 in the last 10 yrs, and being realistic most of our Senior Panel have come through that system, but, I feel it needs an overhaul, as the game has changed over last 15 years, but, I don’t think we have.I’m not aware of how the Development Squads run, or what they concentrate on maybe @CDG would have a better idea.
But, IMO there should be a Template drawn up i.e. U.14 work on certain elements of the game, then U.15 work on the next set, and so on…We currently have Minor Managers imposing their style, then players move to U.21’s and it’s another style, then change again at Senior etc. All three should be working together.
If a Minor Manager knows that when he takes the job that players are at a certain skill level and mindset, and have come through a structured set of Training from U.14,he can then stamp his mark on it,but, he should also know what he’s expected of him to be handing over to the U.21 manager and so on.
I don’t know if many Ressers are managing teams at the moment, but, I think it’s vital that from U.14 up, Coaches should start introducing players to the Tactical side of the game, or get them to ask questions about why we’re doing certain things in Training, purely to get them thinking, I find it works well as it helps hugely with decision making on the pitch.
And realistically, if you have players that want to aspire to be playing Senior Inter County they will be getting this on Inter County Squads.
