No-one is a bigger fan than me of Gilroy Alan. He brought Dublin football back from the wilderness so he’ll always be a hero to me.
He had played Gaelic Football to a very high standard, was a very good player himself and has all ireland senior football medals and senior club football medals… Hence any management inexperience in his chosen sport he could solve by using his nous acquired on a football pitch. I just don’t see how he acquires that nous at hurling management having never tried it before at a lower level or having at least played the game as an adult.
Sentimentality does not cover expertise in another sport. The Dublin hurlers are entitled to be given the best chance possible. Taking a punt on a manager with no proven expertise in the areas as either a player or a manager is flying a kite.
You can put all the best people around somebody. But at some point they’ll be looking to the manager to come with up the answers. Because it’s his team and he’s the public face of the team .
If it was the footballers it would never happen and you know that. So this is just going to Vegas and putting the mortgage on black and hoping it comes up.
I’d be quite happy to see him succeed if he was given it but I fear it would go pretty averagely where we’d be no further down the road in 3 years
