Yes, absolutely, the system was wrong. The system was designed so that people went man for man, that resulted in O Carroll being midfield for a while and MDMA being full back. Also some of the match ups were wrong, Cooper was CHB and was a six inches smaller then the guy he was marking. It was also the wrong day to be playing Costello. But I think all that is understandable, you had a management team that had swept all before them and the system worked. I guess the only really way you know when a system won’t work, is when it doesn’t. But hopefully now Dublin interrogate their own plans more for flaws and have counter measures ready.
I think we should aim to win this game by 3 or4 points. If we go out with the attitude of putting up a big score we could be in trouble. We only need to score maybe 15 points and we will win. If we have say 22 shots and score 15 we will be ok. But if we aim to have 40 shots and score 23 or something, we will turn the ball over 17 times and they will score every time from that and some will be goals. Add that to the scores they get from just general play and we will find our selves behind. If we aim to only shoot when we have a 90% chance of scoring and we keep the ball the rest of the time we will be fine. If we get to that situation and we have our 3 point lead or so, and then Tyrone have to come and get the ball, we can open them up then.
Tyrone will have a plan to counter the wing switching that we do to open up a packed defence, they also will not foul. If they don’t foul, we are down 6 or 7 points on previous days. I think this game calls for a Pat Gilroy type set up. The half backs only join in when there is a real opening, they should not try to force it. O Callaghan should not be at 14, as he won’t get a ball in there, he needs to be at 11 or not starting. Flynn should start, but needs to limit the long kick passing that causes turn overs. The key thing for the whole game is no turn overs. If it is one nil at half time that is ok. There also needs to be a surprise of some sort. Tyrone are very regimented and will have their system 100% sorted, but Harte is not good at changes on the day, we need to give him something to worry about. Also, we need to mark Sludden out of it. Maybe put James Mc on him, he is the danger man.
