Unfortunately the running game led to the neanderthal rugby-style hurling KK inflicted on all of us. They pioneered the idea of half-forwards playing as auxiliary midfielders, corner-forwards playing ten yards back, midfielders playing ten yards back etc for opposition puck-outs. This naturally led to the sweeper system with a midfielder almost being a traditional center-back and the actual center-back camping out in the space in front of the full-back marking nobody.
Its why I find it hard to praise players like De Burca, as he doesn't have to make the difficult decisions center-backs in the past had to make regarding positioning and marking. A lot of the nuance of the position is gone.
